How to Measure for Pinch Pleat and Pencil Pleat Curtains

Getting the right measurements ensures your curtains hang perfectly and complement your windows beautifully. Follow this simple guide before placing your order.

Measuring the Width

If you already have a curtain pole or track:

  • Measure the width of the pole only, between the decorative finials or end caps, or measure the full width of your curtain track.
  • Do not include the finials or overlap arms — we only need the usable width where the curtain will hang.

If you don’t yet have a pole or track:

  • Measure the width of your window reveal (the inside frame).
  • Then add extra width on both sides to allow the curtains to extend beyond the window — this helps block more light and gives a fuller appearance.
  • Typically, add 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) on each side.

Measuring the Length (Drop)

Decide where you want your curtains to finish — at the sill, below the sill, or to the floor.

If you are using a curtain track:

  • To the Sill: Measure from the top of the track to 1 cm above the sill.
  • Below the Sill: Measure from the top of the track to your preferred length below the sill (usually 15–20 cm).
  • If there’s a radiator below, measure to 3 cm above the radiator.
  • To the Floor: Measure from the top of the track to 1.5 cm above the floor — this prevents dragging or soiling.
  • For a “puddled” or draped effect, add extra length as desired.
These are the final measurements we require.

If you are using a curtain pole:

  • To the Sill: Measure from the underside of the pole ring to 1 cm above the sill.
  • Below the Sill: Measure from the underside of the pole ring to your desired length below the sill (usually 15–20 cm).
  • If a radiator is beneath, measure to 3 cm above the radiator.
  • To the Floor: Measure from the underside of the pole ring to 1.5 cm above the floor.
  • This keeps curtains from dragging or becoming marked.
  • For a draped look, add extra length as preferred.
These are the final measurements we require.

Tisaz Tip

For elegant fullness and balanced pleats, we recommend curtain widths 2 to 2.5 times the width of your pole or track.
This ensures your pinch or pencil pleat curtains gather beautifully when drawn.
